Call For Altaristas
Dear Friend,
If you are a returning Altarista, welcome back...
If you're joining us for the first time, greetings to you!
THE ALTAR SHOW, Art of Renewal and Remembrance celebrates its twelfth year in Nevada County for nine days, October 24 through November 1, 2009, in the Northern Mines Building at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California -- and we invite you to join us as an Exhibiting Altarista.
The show is neither juried nor commercial and is open to all regardless of age or calling. It is inspired by the traditional Latin American "Dia de los Muertos", celebrated on November 1 (All Saints' Day) and November 2 (All Souls' Day) and similar celebrations throughout the world.
The medium and subject you choose for your altar can be as wide as your imagination, as free as your spirit suggests. We trust your altar will reflect a profound expression of your feelings; and we hope you will join us in creating a safe and comfortable sacred space for both participants and visitors.
We wish to avoid any kind of censorship so we must rely on your good judgment and common sense. You should not endorse specific political candidates or advertise commercial businesses. We encourage Altaristas to visit and maintain their altars, but we ask that they do not inhabit them.
Please note the installation times and plan to have your altar completed by 10:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23.
The East Wing (with concrete floor) will be lit by altar lights only, without overhead fluorescent lights.
Admission is free to the public so we must rely entirely on volunteers to staff the show. Therefore each participant agrees to volunteer for a job and also have two docent shifts during the show. The jobs could include postering, taping, publicity, fund raising, cleanup, helping at events, etc. As a docent you are responsible for welcoming guests, introducing the altars and arrangements in general -- a pleasurable experience for yourself and our visitors.
You must attend one of two Organizational Meetings to choose a space, sign up for a job, and arrange for your docent shifts. The meetings will be at the Northern Mines Building at the Nevada County Fairgrounds (enter Gate 1) on Thursday, August 20 at 6:00 p.m. OR Saturday, September 19 at 3:00 p.m. If you would like to repeat the same space that you had at the 2008 show, please indicate this on the Application form.
All fees, applications, and statements are due on or before the September 19th Organizational Meeting. Your statement should be no longer than 50 words - it should have your name, a title, and words about your altar. It must be entirely legible and exactly as you wish it to appear in the catalog. You may submit your Statement directly to Charles Woods at charles@wvswrite.com.
If you are unable to attend either Organizational Meeting, you must send a representative to make decisions and commitments for you.
Please see the Application/Entry Form for the size and cost of the spaces.
We look forward to your participation!
