Call For Altaristas
Dear Friend,
If you are a returning Altarista, welcome back...
If you're joining us for the first time, greetings to you!
THE ALTAR SHOW, Renewal and Remembrance celebrates its eleventh year in Nevada County for ten days, October 26 through November 4, 2008, in the Northern Mines Building at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California -- and we invite you to join us as an Exhibiting Altarista.
The show is neither juried nor commercial and is open to all regardless of age or calling. It is inspired by "Dia de los Muertos", the traditional Mexican "Day of the Dead" and similar celebrations throughout the world. The medium you choose for your altar can be as wide as your imagination, as free as your spirit suggests. We trust your altar will reflect a profound expression of your feelings; and we hope you will join us in creating a safe and comfortable sacred space for everyone who participates and all who visit.
We must rely on your good judgment and common sense as we wish to avoid any kind of censorship. You should refrain from endorsing specific political candidates or advertising commercial businesses. Altaristas are encouraged to maintain and tend their altars, but we ask that they do not inhabit them.
Please note the installation times and plan to have your altar completed by 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 25.
In response to requests, the East Wing (with concrete floor) will be lighted by altar lights only, with overhead fluorescent lights turned off.
Because admission is free we must rely entirely on volunteers to staff the show. Therefore each participant should agree to volunteer for a job and to also have two docent shifts during the show. The jobs could include postering, taping, publicity, fund raising, cleanup, helping at events, etc. As a docent you are responsible for welcoming guests and introducing the altars and arrangements in general -- a pleasurable experience for yourself and our visitors.
You must attend one of two Orientation Meetings to choose a space, sign up for a job, and arrange for your shifts as docent. These meetings will be at the Northern Mines Building, Nevada County Fairgrounds (enter Gate 1) on Thursday, August 21 at 6 p.m. OR Saturday, September 13 at 3 p.m.
All fees and entry forms are due on or before the September 13 Orientation Meeting.
No later than Saturday, September 13 you should submit a statement of 50 words or less about your altar with a title, your name and a description of your altar. The statement must be exactly as you wish it to appear in the catalog; you should be sure it is entirely legible. If you wish to submit your Statement directly for preparation, you may e-mail it to Charles Woods at charles@wvswrite.com.
If you are unable to attend either Orientation Meeting, you must send a representative to make decisions and commitments for you.
Please see the Application/Entry Form below for the size and cost of the spaces. If you have questions please call Meg Hughes at 530-432-5746, email: hughes@nccn.com.
